On 21 December 2022, we lost a true legend of the club.
Bill Kelly , coach of PHOS 1979 Premiership sadly passed away after a lengthy illness.
Bill had a successful football career before joining PHOS having played for Woodville FC in its inaugural SANFL league game in 1964. He represented Woodville with distinction, later winning a premiership as captain coach of Plympton FC and winning several mail medals. He was also a Golden Gloves boxing champion. “Hook” lost half of an arm in a 1970 workplace accident and still played unbelievably well after that such was his determination.
But it was as a leader of PHOS that we particularly remember Bill. He was a domineering personality who drove the club forward, professionalising all we did on and off the field. He instilled self belief in our players and a high level of fitness. He installed oval lighting and upgraded our clubrooms, all part of his drive to ensure all members acted to grow the club.
He had an enduring influence on the lives of all who knew him.
Thanks for everything Bill.
Vale Bill Kelly, 19/1/1944 – 21/12/2022
